Number 73 - February 2016

L.O.W. Annual Meeting Time

Itís that time of year again and our Annual Meeting of the Lake of the Woods Steam and Gas Engine Association has been scheduled for 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church, located on Rocky Point RD (County RD 17), 6 miles North of Roosevelt.

As it is each year, and doesnít seem to change much, we have a lot of business to discuss in preparation for this yearís show; election of directors, discussion of work that needs to be done, ideas to improve our show, along with good fellowship with old and/or new friends, and of course enjoy some good refreshments. Also bring along any of your friends who may be interested in exhibiting, playing with or just looking at any of the Old Tractors, Cars, Engines, Farm Equipment, and other Old Stuff that was used many years ago by our ancestors on the farm, home and etc. Perhaps we can encourage them to become members of our small, but great, organization.

Call Troy Comstock at 424-7455 or Steve LaDuke at 386-1302 or William Olson at 442-6381 for more information about our association and our show.

As far as Northern Minnesota goes, it has been, as somewhat predicted, a mild winter, so far. Weíve only had about 20 inches of snow so far, with 14 inches on the ground at my place now. Where 2 years ago we had 46 inches of snowfall and 16 inches on the ground. Our temperatures have been a bit milder than what we are accustomed to, with only about a week and a half of minus teens & twenties in mid January. The fishermen had to patiently or sometimes not so patiently wait for sufficiently thick ice on the lake to safely get started on their normal winter pastime of ice fishing.

It was good to have Mark Engen, and Jeanine, back in the saddle again last year after his terrible accident, many surgeries and his continuing recovery. I know he enjoyed mowing the grass around the grounds prior to the show, and getting back on his tractor for the daily parade. Perhaps the Arizona climate will continue to bring restoration to his body and soul.

Phyllis Hassa, a long time friend & guest of our show, wife of late member, Paul Hassa and mother of member Lauren Hassa, passed away in December of 2015. Paul and Lauren used to operate the Minneapolis Steam Traction Engine and blow the whistle for the steam signals each year.

Last yearís weather for the show was reasonable and we are hoping for good weather and a good turnout for this year.

Spread the news far and wide that we are planning on having a great show and lots of fun this year.
