CHANGING GEARS

Six-Speed Manual

The ZF M6OD manual six-speed transmission, which is standard with the PowerStroke diesel engine, features a wider span of gear ratios.   Ratios for first through fifth gears have lower and closer gear ratios for optimal torque management, and sixth gear is higher.

The new six-speed manual transmission has an improved clutch operation because of improved hydraulics in the clutch release that help travel efficiency and reduces friction.  Which results in clutch efforts that does not get heavier with use, an extended-range clutch design, and a light, smooth shift action.   First and second gear dual-cone synchronizers provide low-shift efforts.  It has a low creeper gear and a high-mileage and range-boosting overdrive gear.

An integrated oil pump and external coolant circuit are designed for thermal management during severe use and are standard for all applications.   You can't ask for anything more from a manual transmission.

Automatic Four-Speed

The 4R100 transmission was developed for the new generation of intercooled diesel and TritonV-10 high-torque engines.  The new automatic transmission, with 500 foot-pound engine torque capacity, is optional on all SuperDuty F-Series trucks, except the F-550 model, on which it is standard. The transmission is expected to lead the segment in towing ratings.

The 4R100 represents significant upgrades in features and quality actions.  Short term benefits include improved customer drivability, serviceability and durability.  Long term benefits include standardization across vehicle applications for all future models and associated reduced complexity in manufacturing and field service.

The 4R100 also includes a new lubrication system for improved lube performance under extreme temperatures, loading and RPM conditions.   Also included is an all-new transmission cooling system.  This dedicated air-to-oil system provides reduced operating temperatures under all operating conditions, including heavy towing and city driving.

It also includes a new family of torque converters for improved durability and enhanced drivability.  Smoother shifts with the absence of gear hunting during lock up is achieved through new hydraulic controls and upgraded electronic programming.
