The Chevrolet Corvette will lead the drivers at the Indy 500 for a record-setting fifth time at this year's Indianapolis 500. The 50th Anniversary Edition 2003 Corvette pace car will signal the start of a year-long celebration of the nameplate's 50th birthday, according to Corvette brand manager Rick Baldick. The Corvette becomes the only model ever to pace the Indy 500 five times. This will also mark the 13th time that a Chevrolet has been selected as the Indy 500 pace car, the most appearances by any brand.
Three of the first 2003 Corvette coupes have been outfitted for pace car duty at the speedway this year. The cars are "Anniversary Red" with gold wheels. The cars are essentially stock, with only minor upgrades to the suspension, transmission, and exhaust systems and mandatory safety features added. The pace car will be driven by 33-year-old actor Jim Caviezel.
The three pace cars will be supported by a fleet of Sebring Silver 2002 Chevy Camaro Z28 convertibles. These cars will also be decorated with Indy 500 graphics and will be used for the Indy 500 festival and parade activities. Three additional 2002 Corvette convertibles in Speedway White have also been decorated with the Indy 500 graphics package and are expected to be used for the race festivities.
